Nigerians have reacted bitterly on social media as the country celebrates its 61st Independence Day anniversary today, 1st October 2021.

The country gained independence from the United Kingdom on 1st October 1960. However, some people have expressed that there is nothing worth celebrating after breaking free from colonial rule.

According to them, the country has been going through the worst phase for decades because of bad leadership that has taken over since its independence. Most people pointed out a few alarming things in the country including insecurities, bloodshed, terrorism, kidnapping, poverty, police brutality, tribalism, and more.

Some also made reference to the remarkable #ENDSARS protest that ended the lives of hundreds of innocent Nigerians fighting for a good course in the country. They argued that what is more important to them is the remembrance of the death of some protestors on October 10th (#ENDSARS protest day), not the independence day, since the country gives them nothing to be proud of.
