Social media users have descended on Nigerian artiste, DJ Cuppy for celebrating Nigeria as it marks its 61st Independence Day anniversary today, 1st October 2021.

DJ Cuppy took to Twitter to wish her fellow compatriots a happy independence day but it seems some people just weren’t happy with that.

“My people, Happy Independence Day!,” she wrote.

However, some tweeps thought it was inappropriate to say that because the country is going through tough times, but she can’t relate because she is from a rich background. Therefore, for someone who has been spoon-fed with luxury life since birth, she should not wish people a ‘happy’ independence day because there is nothing to be happy about.

They expressed that the country is in a mess, making reference to things like the naira’s depreciation ($1 is now N570 naira), citizens only getting access to Twitter by using VPN, and many other things.

One of the most important things that were mentioned was the #ENDSARS protest that happened on 10th October 2021 and saw the death of innocent Nigerians who were killed by military and police officials.
